Principal Scientist – Stem Cell Biology, Production & R&D, Leader

As (Associate) Principal Scientist, you will be accountable for the delivery of all Axol manufactured products and services, that we will supply to our customers by managing the laboratory team, adhering to the highest quality production standards, as well as ensuring that products are manufactured cost effectively.

Key responsibilities

As Principal Scientist, you will lead a talented and highly educated team of scientists to manufacture Axol’s current product portfolio as well as guiding them in individual research projects, which will result in Axol’s future products. In parallel you will also work with the finance and commerce teams to ensure that all projects are managed in a cost-effective way, as well as keeping appropriate stock levels. Ensuring our products are biologically relevant and produced with expected quality control will also be key.

You will have a strong strategic and tactical understanding of how stem cell biology and cell biology production techniques align to the needs of our customers and lead by example, so will be a presence in the laboratory, working on production runs with the team. You will also be accountable for ensuring that all activities are delivered on time, demonstrating behaviours and values aligned to Axol’s ethics and supporting policies, standards and procedures, including compliant management and preparation of Budgets and Forecasts, Safety, Health and Environment.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent in stem cell biology, neuroscience, immunology, biochemistry or a related discipline with relevant experience in the manufacture of biological products
  • Experience of the latest advances in stem cell production technology and media manufacture
  • Proven technical abilities and skills to manufacture cells, media and perform all relevant supporting techniques
  • Experience of the drug discovery and development process in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Project management experience in the research and development and validation of reprogramming of iPSCs and differentiation into different cell types (as well as the troubleshooting and QC), and the design and execution of experiments
  • At least 3 years’ experience of managing and leading a team within a commercial environment
  • Ability to connect the requirements of the customer market with the manufacturing skills and techniques available in house
  • Experience of detailed manufacturing budget preparation within a commercial laboratory environment

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience within the biotechnology community and experience of working within a revenue focused environment
  • Outsourcing of laboratory assays, biomarker development experience

Lab Technician

Axol are now seeking a top calibre candidate for our growing Lab Team! We need a fresh, highly motivated individual to support the development and production of various types of cell culture reagents, stem cells and their functional derivatives such as neurons and cardiomyocytes.

  • Work at the coal face with our cells to ensure their growth, survival and specialization
  • Work the R&D with novel cell culture and cryopreservation reagent strategies
  • Follow the script by adhering to cell culture production Standard Operating Procedures, including validating these procedures by a parallel approach to test multiple parameters aka experimental Quality by Design
  • Not follow the script and be adaptable, flexible and nimble because sometimes cell culture will throw a curve ball at you!
  • Track record of experimental procedures and maintain updated lab-books to high standards
  • Report results and troubleshooting with senior colleagues
  • Support lab process improvements to improve efficiency and reduce costs
  • Support the Team by pitching in with general laboratory maintenance including keeping tabs on stocks, sourcing, aliquots, medium preparation and other tasks as required
  • Participate on weekend work on a rota basis

Full Stack Programmer

Summary
Develop the bespoke software that will underlie the company’s commercial activities and support the ongoing IT operations of the company.

Key responsibilities

  • Collecting and expanding the specifications for development projects through internal and external conversations.
  • Implementing and testing bespoke software in accordance with the collected specifications.
  • Inducting and training staff on our systems and providing internal software and hardware support as needed.
  • Other cross-functional tasks as dictated by the situation, principally in collaboration with the Digital Operations Coordinator.

Person specification

  • High degree of confidence working with computers.
  • High degree of competence working with HTML, CSS and JavaScript to develop web based UIs.
  • Substantial experience working with the Python Programming Language.
  • Experience working with DBMSs and SQL.
  • Working knowledge of database design principles.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt.
  • (Desirable) Experience working with or developing for the Odoo ERP platform.
